This is Test 4 on the GED-it measure your ability to understand, analyze, and respond to ideas found in works of literature as well as in business and how-to documents. You will interpret thoughts, feelings and ideas expressed in writing by other people. It includes two major content areas, literature and nonfiction. These are further broken down into the following categories: Literature includes fiction, poetry, and plays, it makes up 75 percent of the test, and is broken down into three time periods: Pre-1920; 1920-1960; 1960 to the present. Nonfiction makes up 25 percent of the test and includes two major types of passages: Viewing component, which consists of detailed descriptive prose. Questions test your understanding of the descriptions in the passage. Business-related documents, such as an employee handbook or instruction for using hardware or software. Questions test your ability to understand and follow directions. The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions. Each set of questions relates to a literature passage that is 300-400 words long or a poem that is 8-25 lines long. Each passage begins with a purpose question. Each of the 40 questions on the test is multiple choice and has five answer choices. These questions are based on four different learning objectives: Comprehension, or understanding; Application, or using information learned form the passage; Analysis, or understanding literary language; and Synthesis or grasping overall or underlying meanings. You may be asked to identify the passage's main idea, to determine a character's motives or feelings or to define a term.
